The Sound of Silence

This song is by Simon and Garfunkel, the iconic duo of the 1960s. I've heard most of their music since 2021. Knowing the song itself first came out on their debut album "Wednesday Morning 3 A.M. as the 6th song. There are two versions: One is the acoustic version from their debut album; And the second is the electric version from their second album, the same name as the song. My favorite version is the acoustic because its more quieter than the electric. All I can is, here is the whole information of the set up, recording the song, edit and mixing track, and provide my explanation to the project.

Set up and Recording

For the set up, I used two microphones, both of them were the Shure SM58s. I connected both the microphones to Snake B. The audio plug ins I used for the microphones is Audient. Both of them have to provide phantom power and gain stage them (All of them are done by myself). For the recording of the song, I have to sing with two different mics, all of them were connected to Snake B 1 and 2. I did Mic 1 first (Lead Vocal 1) which is the lead vocal of Art Garfunkel. I did about two takes and take two was the best to go with. For Mic 2 (Lead Vocal 2) which is the lead vocal of Paul Simon, I have to sing in Minor such as Simon did from the original recording. I did three takes singing the vocal in minor. I recorded a second take then it stopped recording because of the playback was enabled. After I disabled the playback to record the third take, take 3 is the best to go with.

Editing and Mixing

I playback both the vocal tracks to hear how it sounds and it sounded good. I edited both the tracks together. All of them I have to put on slip mode because I have to playback the track to aligned the vocals to find the right time and connection, and I did for about 30 seconds. After aligning them together, I playback the track and it sounded right on and was all go together in one piece. Plus, I even highlight some of the vocals lines to adjust the volume which are highlighted, copy, delete, paste it, and adjusted the track's clip's sections. Some of them are too high and a few were a little low and all of it sounded well at that volume. For the mixing, I only used one plug-in to match the reverb echo. Which is the Studio Reverb plug-in and have the reverb in a Medium Theater sound. And lastly I pan the vocal tracks: Lead vocal 1 panned on the left; Lead Vocal 2 panned on the right. After that, I listened back and it sounded so pure just like the original recording.

Reflections

This solo recording of me doing vocals on a song I have been singing a lot of times, practicing both of the duo's vocal performances one by one until I officially come to the moment this is what I really wanted to do as my solo instrument project and that is the way I wanted to be. Furthermore, I am really grateful for my solo recording project because hearing both my vocal performances in this kind of style just matched together and the right reverb to understand this is more perfect than the original recording of the song itself.
