Piano Sonata in F Sharp Major (With Elements from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and Professor Layton and the Curious Village
So this self-guided project I am doing is considered one of my most interesting recording projects I ever come up with. You know that I am a percussionist with drums, mallets, bongos, and other certain types of percussion instruments I usually played on. This one is a Piano Sonata I actually made up in the style of F Sharp Major. Now, the F Sharp Major key is actually one of the major scales that I practiced the most on marimba. And even during my private lessons with Professor Fung, he said that this scale was the hardest for him to practice to find the second last white key on the marimba. For this project, my point of view of making a Piano Sonata in F Sharp make me considered the next person to create this type of Piano piece knowing other composers in the 1700s creates most iconic requiems in other major and minors but other composers over the years creating a piece in this scale in music history, making myself becoming the next person to make a Piano Sonata in F Sharp. So here is my full information of recording the Sonata together.
Recording, Special Effects, and Elements of the Project
For recording the project, I even made up a special genre to provide special effects to the Piano piece together. I wanted to create a Piano piece with a nice relax style of peace meaning the movement of water. I got this idea very quickly when I was at Ohiopyle with my mother while on spring break and got this idea as I was sitting on the rock cliff next to the lake of the falls. The sound of the water splish splashing next to the rock as a mini wave sounded like a good opening to the project. So I recorded three clips of the mini wave splash, the big falls as I was on the cliff, and a nice river flowing stream. Since I able to record the three clips, I decided to use them for a beginning, middle, and the end. Which I can create two movements of my Piano piece with the three clips in audio into Protools. And that is why this recording with the effects of the splish splash, the medium sound of the river flowing down, and the big sound of the falls at the end can make this piece as a Classical Ambient genre piece. For the piano for the project, I used the one piano from the band storage next to the stair well that has very good echo to provide three microphone: A stereo on the piano and a mono on the stair well surrounding the reverb. I even use a stopwatch timer on my phone because I have to provide a recording time of the project and allow to include the audio clips of the falls I recorded. For elements I include on the project is using two important music pieces from a movie and a video game that I loved: Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and Professor Layton. The soundtrack of the Mr. Lawrence movie composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto has this opening chord in that style of F sharp as it was in my project in the key which is inspiring to memorize it before using it in my project as an element. The Professor Layton and the Curious Village is the one that has the special marimba sound when the one scene that the Professor and his backup Luke Triton welcomed Lady Dahlia in the manor's living room and hearing this piece that has the bringing of using it in my piece as my second element to the project. Everything I have to bring before recording the project and practicing the piece before the recording does have to bring ideas and then I finally got it all in one project.
